AWN! On The Radio!

We are pretty much blown away to have had the Arthur Winkler NOW! album ‘The Yellow Emperor’ (basically Matt and I in the noise laundry) broadcast on Bruges (Fucking Bruges!) radio station Villabota on the ASYLA experimental show, in its entirety! The album basically bookends the show, entitled ‘Episode of the Emperor, Or Ruler’, with Side A being played at the start and Side B being played at the end of the show. Here is the show on mixcloud:

How cool is that?!

If you view it on mixcloud the show is described as “A feel good noise mix in the sandwich with Arthur Winklers’ Yellow Emperor.” Which is also really cool. It’s like Disperse is a properly legitimate organisation…

Massive thanks to Alex Goetinck who runs the ASYLA show for such a fantastic compliment and of course for putting us on the show. Given the sort of music we make, it’s extremely gratifying to know that there is a ‘market’ for it and that there are people out there who dig it.

This tune I made…

I made this a while back and have been meaning to post it somewhere for ages. Finally this seems like the perfect opportunity for some reason.

It’s a dusty RZAish beat banged out in a day for a bit of fun. Reclaimed from an old northern soul tune I heard out in the car, with teh missus, listening to Paul O’Grady on Radio 2. Rock & Roll.

How Long?!

Well, well reader, it has been so long… so very long and so much has happened.

Oh (possibly imaginary) reader, let me tell you…

As we said to all one of you in our last post, we have started work on our Arts Council/GFTA funded R&D project LOOM/THADOWS LOOM. We had a cracking time in that first session, where we basically played with fog, projectors, sound and lights all day in the wonderful Trestle theatre space.

We were like ugly sugar filled children playing with prohibited toys – it was great, and we learnt a lot (especially that none of us a particularly great with heights; which is fun when you have to climb the scope to change bits and pieces on the lighting rig).

As far as that session went we were only really looking at some technical issues and didn’t really delve into the concept of the piece.

Enter our wonderful lone performer Georgina Roberts and mentor Emily Gray.

With them we had a fantastic few days exploring narrative, characterisation and the tentative script/ story board we had produced. We even warmed up with them using Polish vocal resonance techniques, which, to a bunch tech-heads and firmly ‘desk’ based artists was.. frankly.. hilarious – but well worth it.

Anyway, I won’t say to much more – you will have to wait and see when we next post… which will literally be in about 30 minutes as I’m catching up. But that doesn’t bother you does it – certainly-possible reader.

Here’s a couple of very poor images from the workshops

Al & Jim warm up with Emily – note the wonderful balance of the VIDEOfeet team.

The wonderful Georgie warming – looking slightly more composed than Al and Jim, I have to say…

JIm acting as audience – what is he thinking?

Al recording Georgie… hopefully for some reason.

Speak soon reader… much sooner

Hi There!

A new post for all of our reader!

Sorry it’s been so long, reader. Nonetheless, I must press on and get down to business.

We’ve finally gotten ourselves in the theatre to start work in earnest on our GFtA-funded project LOOM/THADOWS LOOM. Had a great day last Friday, learnt a lot about what we can do (and probably more importantly, what we CAN’T do…) and generally had a really productive time. And, for that matter, a lot of fun. One of the things that really struck me was how, when we were working in the space, there was no thought given at all to this being work or tiring in any way shape or form, but when we got home…whew…suddenly we all just collapsed as one…

So, without further ado and in no particular order, here are a whole bunch of nice pictures from the day:

Matt & Jim in front of projection

It’s Matt and Jim!

Looking into the light coming out from the projector

Mmm, smoke machine. Mmm projector. One of the things we found is that the projector we bought is fantastic.

Action shot of me walking through smoke

How did a stripy shirted shaven ape get in the theatre? And where is it going with that cardboard?

Me with smoke machine

And what the hell is wrong with his feet! Put that down!

Shot from 2001 with lightning

Just to point out to our (possibly imaginary) reader – we made all the projection material. It’s all us and none of it is stuff from 2001 that we just using for test purposes.

Me Lit up

And the image being projected here is something that Jim got on his visit to the Hubble space telescope. He used the ‘Space telescope to Canon EF mount’ adaptor that he got off Amazon.

Two macs lit dramatically

Just smoke and lights…

You can’t tell, but in this picture I’m using a wicked bit of freeware called ‘ppooll’ (www.ppooll.klingt.org) to remix Madonna into something completely unrecognisable. I’ll post that up here as soon as I can whop it onto Soundcloud.

Noise Basement (& Laundry) Grinds into Action

Well, well… it’s taken a while but we’ve blocked out the light, closed the doors & ventured down into the depths of our noise making basement (and laundry), and finally finished it.  Actually that’s a lie; we’ve still got a few things to plug in and will consume at least 12 cups of tea before its all functional (and frankly, the 3 legged monstrosity we’ve made out of random bits of wood we’re calling a table isn’t up to much – although its good to put my old autoharp on). It’s also a chance to give our recently acquired Novation A-station synth a whirl… looks like an interesting piece of kit – although it doesn’t have the lovelyness of a true analogue synth, it sure as hell has the potential to make some left field sounds. I’m interested in using it’s input capabilities to feed some rotten samples in from an Akai X7000 – true 80’s mess.  Hopefully we’ll have some stuff to show you soon.  Also looking forward to listening to the new Autechre Album “Oversteps” on vinyl down there – which you must buy.

Touch Radio

I have recently been listening to some of the podcasts Touch Records have on their radio site. Some really interesting stuff – the latest post is Chris Watson’s ‘a journey south’ - an audio diary of his trip sound recording in Antarctica. There’s a part with a recording of the ice breaking recorded underwater – really otherwordly sounds, detailed and multi layered, that stand up as incredible music in their own right.
